Skopje, Macedonia

Welcome to Eastern Europe! Alex and I arrived in Skopje after about 24 hours of traveling the entire length of Greece. Our hotel is....
...well awesome, obviously. Skopje, on the other hand, is not going to win any beauty contests any time soon. It's cool nonetheless, and Alex and I had a lazy Sunday strolling the old town, market (again, with more knockoff crap under one roof than we have seen in a while...my favorite was "SQMY" clock radio, instead of "SONY").
We just happened to be in town for a busker festival. Five months ago I would have had no idea what this was, but we had seen one advertised in New Zealand while we were there and I of course was dying to attend. Buskers are street performers for all of you crossword and Scrabble nerds out there. This festival had a little bit of everything. So after finishing our grand tour of Skopje (about 2 hours) Alex and I basically walked circles around the town square over and over again. One minute Brazilian drummers, next minute Swiss aerial acrobats, next Australian acapella singers. Something for everyone. The majority totally cheesy and a bit painful to watch, but hey, at least the performers were having fun.
July 26, 1963. 6:15 pm. The clock on the old train station stopped the minute part of Yugoslavia was wrecked by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake. Unfortunately countless ancient buildings were destroyed ushering a new wave of concrete.
Cool art on the Stone Bridge spanning the Vardar River.
A pretty awesome art gallery in a large hammam. Christian churches next to Islamic mosques next to hammams. Welcome to Macedonia.
Guard dog watching over some priceless pottery at one of the town's archaeological sites.
