We have arrived in paradise. After about 2 hours here Alex and I quickly turned our 4 night stay to 8. I have been doing absolutely nothing. Sitting. Reading. Sitting. More reading.
Oh and eating gyros.
The view from our apartment. Santorini, or Thira as it is called in Greek, is what remains from an ancient volcanic eruption. The eruption is said to have destroyed the civilization of Crete and led to the internal collapse of a large portion of the island. What remains is a donut shaped (very deep) lagoon known as the caldera. The views from Oia, the northernmost portion of the island, look out over the caldera and the volcanic center of the island.
This is our view and this is why I haven't left the porch for 4 days. Much like in Turkey, our little apartment is in a cave that was carved into the volcanic hillside. Cool all year and absolutely cosy.
I have never ever seen a moon rise like the one we saw our first night. The moon was full and huge and yellow and it rose over the town of Fira in the distance.
Sunset wasn't bad either. Supposed to be the prettiest in the Greek Isles.
Our sunset dinner spot our first day in the port of Ammoudi. Amazing views and fresh fish on the grill. We worked off the beer and mezedes on our hike back up the hill (although I really wanted to ride a donkey).
Behind me is the town of Fira, the capital. We have grand plans of venturing out and exploring the island but so far have found it difficult to leave the terrace.
Its no Seagrove. There's not really a beach, more a rocky shoreline with a few spots to jump into the cold but refreshing Mediterannean water.
The famous Grecian blue and white.
Donkeys haul up supplies and lazy tourists. They add such charm. Every day we sit and listen as about 15 of them are coralled up the narrow steps next to our apartment. Enjoying a glass of Santorini wine and watching the donkeys return home is easily my favorite part of the day.

Man oh man that looks FABULOUS. I can see why you got stuck there. Nice.
ReplyDeleteSorry I've been out of contact. Work is crazy, along with too much to manage on the home front. But hopefully the summer will slow down just a bit.
The two of you look so very happy. Which makes me so very happy too.
All is well.
Ah, Santorini! Judi and I spent a similar few days there some 20 years ago after attending a real Greek wedding (Do think Mama Mia!) on Mykonos. I thought we had all died and gone to blue and white heaven when we all moved over to Santorini. Judi and I took one of the best hikes we've ever been on along the ridge off to the east. So glad you go to see, feel this wonderful part of the world.
